New to Murroe –

Murroe Community Text Alert

Since its establishment under the auspices of Munitir na Tire in the 1984, COMMUNITY ALERT has had a role in counteracting crime and protecting the elderly and the vulnerable, particularly in remote rural areas across the whole country. More recently, the ever increasing cutbacks affecting policing in the rural area have resulted in the introduction of new and innovative ways to tackle crime in the rural community. One such new idea is the Community Text Alert Scheme.

The Community Text Alert is a scheme that allows the local community members to actively contribute to crime prevention in their local area by; communicating any suspicious activity to the Gardai and in turn, receive broadcast information from the Gardai about any potential criminal activity in the local or surrounding area of the community.

So how does this work?

With the upcoming nationwide rollout of the new Community Text Alert Scheme, a local committee has been formed to introduce and implement this scheme in the Murroe area.

In association with the Murroe Community Council, Muintir na Tíre & An Garda Síochána, this scheme will be rolled out in the Murroe area in the coming weeks.

As the scheme becomes established, road signs like the one shown below will be erected in strategic sites throughout the local area. These signs will act as a further deterrent to those intent on coming in to our community to carry out acts of crime.

Information leaflets advertising the Community Text Alert Scheme for the Murroe area will be circulated throughout the area and made available at some of the businesses in the village area.  Subsequently, a community council Text Alert Scheme representative will call to your door with all the relevant information for you to make an informed decision to decide if you wish to participate. The representatives will be calling directly to houses from the 17th May.

The entry cost to the scheme for an individual member will be set at 5 Euro per mobile number (or land line or email), which essentially will cover the costs of texts for one year. Although not required, any additional contributions during the initial setup phase of the scheme would be greatly appreciated.

The benefits of this scheme include:

  • Enhanced crime prevention status for Community Alert with improved community/Garda participation and joint practical activities
  • Reduction in crime
  • Community feel safer
  • Increased communication amongst local residents via the text system
  • Increased communication between An Garda Síochána and the community
  • Better relations between An Garda Síochána and the community
  • Gardaí are now able to get information to the community instantly
  • Gardaí can canvass hundreds of subscribers in an instant should they require information
  • Increased inter-community cooperation through other area text alert schemes

We believe that this scheme will be a positive step forward for the community and its success really depends on the involvement and support of the local community members.  That means you!

So watch this space for more updates on the rollout of this scheme and we hope to see you soon in our travels throughout the community!
