Scott Peck begins his book, The Road Less Travelled, with the line, ‘Life is difficult’. No one would dispute this fact. Suffering in some form, is a major part of life’s difficulty. Most of us wont suffer constantly but because we are human we can expect to experience times of mental, emotional and physical suffering. Bearing this suffering gracefully is the challenge. If you can situated it in a framework of meaning that helps greatly. Without a wider ultimate context it is easy to become hardened and bitter. With the right attitude the trials we experience can be purifying and help to intensify the spiritual life. Even in the best of us there is selfishness and stupidity that needs to be subverted and strangely, suffering seems to be one of the most effective ways in which this is achieved.
